Mana Indiris grew up in a Kenyan refugee camp. Her father fled the Ethiopian civil war and moved to Somalia where he met her mother. The civil war in Somalia made them flee again in the early 90s to Kenya. Growing up in a camp, Mana was unable to continue studying after reaching puberty due to the dangerous situation around the area.
In 2014, Mana and her family arrived in Canada as sponsored refugees. It was very hard for everyone to settle in, coming to a new country with a different climate, language and overall society. Since then, her family has been working hard to integrate and become part of the community. Mana is currently upgrading her high school education, volunteers for various community organizations, and dreams of becoming a police officer.
#ICameAsARefugee is a campaign that sheds some positive light on refugees and celebrates their contribution to our society. It is a response to anti-refugee feelings. This campaign highlights six different refugees that came to Canada, and tells their stories through their own words.
