Pablo Policzer was born in Santiago, Chile. After the coup brought in a military dictatorship in 1973, his father was taken as a political prisoner. Shortly after his release, his family came to Canada as refugees in September of 1975. It took his family a great deal of struggle to settle in and find work in order to begin their new life.
Today Dr. Policzer is the Director of the Latin American Research Centre at the University of Calgary, where he is also an Associate Professor of Political Science. He specializes in comparative politics, with a focus on how democratic and authoritarian regimes regulate armed actors, including militaries, police forces, and non-state armed groups. His book The Rise and Fall of Repression in Chile won the Canadian Political Science Association’s 2010 prize for best book on Comparative Politics, in addition to being named by Choice Magazine as an “Outstanding Academic Title” for 2009. Dr. Policzer completed his Ph.D. in Political Science at MIT and his B.A., also in Political Science, at UBC. He lives in Calgary with his wife and three children.
#ICameAsARefugee is a campaign that sheds some positive light on refugees and celebrates their contribution to our society. It is a response to anti-refugee feelings. This campaign highlights six different refugees that came to Canada, and tells their stories through their own words.
